Volunteers turn a fan's recordings of 10,000 concerts into an online treasure trove

In 1989, an up-and-coming rock band from Washington called Nirvana played in Chicago for the first time at a club called Dreamerz

FWIW, I plan to write a tutorial on the taping method and materials I have been using. Perhaps there are better methods, IDK.

It's unfortunate that I am now employing these methods with great interest because when I was in school (late 20th century), Julian Stanczak, a Polish-American painter, was the head of the painting department at CIA.edu, and my self-centered ego had very little interest in him or his work — and students were mostly painting abstract expressionist, surrealist, and narrative-type stuff.

Fortunately, however, there are some really great videos of his extraordinary life and work on YouTube, and some are pedagogical, where he discusses cutting his own tape, incredibly.

The video compilation above is comprised of some recordings I will be using for the tutorial, and I have others.

Maybe I'll add some text and sound track to this compilation over the next month or so.

The uncompressed full-size video (1080 x 1920) can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgfLu0U-tGk

Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Mission accomplished on taping the second grid (~100 x 100 cm). This grid is half the size of the first (~200 x 200 cm), and I plan to paint them both simultaneously, thus doubling or quadrupling my productivity.

I will be staring into a palette of colors most of the time, looking at a display, and counting, and looking at numbers, a lot, is my conclusion — 117 to the fourth power times, to be precise. 😹

I have no idea how this tape is going to work and come off a year from now, even though I've already tested it. But I'm three quarters there to sticking it all on. It's fine, but totally nuts. I have to do a whole series of explanatory videos on this taping method even though I could not recommend taping to anyone and I'm probably doing it wrong. 😹

Taping is not painting LOL, painting upon this is going to be nuts!

Many tricks were involved, my goodness, they were: • constantly measuring making sure I don't get off track • adjusting how I align the vertical guide (not shown) • pulling on the vertical guide, releasing any tension that would allow it to distort, such as bowing • using the tape machine in various ways that are too detailed to describe here • properly working with the tape to avoid stressing it, removing it from the package, and handling • LOL, I can just go on and on.

Anyway, it was not as difficult as I thought, nor as difficult as I had described, once the details were worked out after 97+ vertical lines, and so on. The next run, the 118 perpendiculars, should be fine, at least predictable. 😎

I spent my whole young life trying to avoid repetitive factory work, standing beside an assembly line building machines, but here I am, working at home as nearly a thoughtless robot, barely alive, painting a grid.

[Are we not all only barely alive? The future is unknown for all of us.]

I painted two thin layers of dark acrylic over the tape application to keep the 'strings' in place and fill any potential gaps between the tape and canvas, attached some labeling.

I fabricated a wood-aluminum rail system, 15 minutes (I even waxed it). I will use this rail system for conveniently keeping a steady hand while painting intricate corners of infinity (as far as I'm concerned), exactly like 54,756 new attempts.

I cleaned up the studio, doing laundry, and I am preparing for this project.

I have yet to create the actual image that I will be using as scenery, the subject of this painting — it will take a day, NP.

Sometimes I think of other possible contour scenarios besides the square grid, like combinations of colored diamonds and triangles using the similar color schema development methods —maybe ten years from now.

My eyes are going bonkers after working on this all day.

The ChartPak tape is so interesting because it adheres very well, depending on stable atmospheric conditions, but one can also push it around some after you press it into place, one millimeter with a finger or thumb, adjusting its position without any consequences.

One millimeter is about how much each square is off, about 5%.

ChartPak so amazing.

Notwithstanding, if I wake up in the morning and some of the tape has dis-adhered — this could happen if the room were suddenly to get warm. I have the AC running two cooler than normal, this helps keep things stable.

The tape is 1/32" (0.8 mm) wide and applied 17 mm apart, center to center, basically. That's about one-half kilometer of tape, or about 1600 feet (about 30 rolls).

Rotating the large painting was challenging, but it was possible compared to taping perfect squares. 😹

I can barely believe I am doing this again. 😹
