Used our own compost for the first time this year for our pots. Were very confused when these plants started appearing in all of them.

Think they must be pumpkins, the source of which was the discarded seeds from carving the boys jack o lanterns!
Lessons learned: sift compost before use and make the boys carve turnips like I had to!

I had some poppy seeds fail to thrive earlier this year. So I let the dirt dry out mixed in some stuff after a few weeks and then used it to pot up some echinacea and scattered alysum. The echinacea could not take the heat TJ is experiencing right now, which is a very normal 70-80°f. My bad, I should have started seeds way earlier. Should have started earlier is my mantra this year with plants, but I'm still trying.

The alysum is struggling, so they get misted every morning. I didn't even notice it at first though. Look at this sneaky little bugger. That's a poppy! I hope it gets bigger. They don't like being disturbed so when I dismantled their tray I didn't expect any survivors. I'm wondering if I should scatter some poppy seeds in the fall and see if any come back after the rains next year.
