"Life Is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)" is a 1974 #patterSong written by #NormanDolph (lyrics) and Paul DiFranco (music). It was recorded by an ad hoc group of #studioMusicians called Reunion, with #JoeyLevine as lead singer. The lyrics are a fast recitation of the names of 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s musicians, songwriters, song titles, lyrics, disc jockeys, record labels, and more, broken only by the #chorus. The song is similar to "#IveBeenEverywhere".

"Aja" is a #jazzRock song, with elements of #jazzFusion and #progressiveRock, by the American rock band #SteelyDan (by that time, #WalterBecker and #DonaldFagen) from the #albumOfTheSameName, their sixth studio album, released in 1977. Composers Becker and Fagen play guitar and #synthesizer, respectively, on the song, with various #studioMusicians playing the other parts; Fagen sings lead vocals. Production duties were handled by #GaryKatz.

Watched the entire first season of Columbo this week (it’s mesmerizing!) and I’m continually struck by the soundtrack - real live guys playing trombones and timpani and theremins. In my imagination the studios where they recorded this stuff are so smoky you can barely see. It’s not, like, great music, but it’s often better than it needs to be and that studio musician sound is such a distinctive product of its time. #70stv #columbo #studiomusicians
