For quite a long time after 1945 there was an unkind habit among politicians in the #uk of speculating as to which of their colleagues might or would have been willing to make a deal with #nazi #germany in 1940 or later. This may well have had a material effect in the choice of #primeminister on at least one occasion - namely the succession to #siranthonyeden early 1957. The suspicion the #butler might have been so willing worked against him.

Will #history rhyme? It is just a few days after the sixty eighth anniversary of one of the earliest events I can recall. This was the resignation of #siranthonyeden - the then #uk #primeminister . This occurred as a result of the #uk - along with #france - having occupied the #suez #canalzone by force. This backfired spectacularly - causing significant disruption to shipping routes and several months when petrol - the #uk term for #gasoline - was rationed. Not easy to seize a waterway intact!
