Context: The mask was crafted around 1323 BC for the young pharaoh Tutankhamun, fashioned from gold inlaid with glass and semiprecious stones to serve as his immortal likeness in the afterlife. It was placed directly over his mummified face inside nested coffins in his burial chamber, where it remained untouched until the tomb’s modern discovery in 1925 by Howard Carter at the Valley of the Kings.
