Dreaded fire ant's sting burns, but wasps, hornets and bull ants top the Schmidt pain index

Fire ants are a real pain. Their name is based on what it feels like to be stung by one — but it is far from the biggest pain in the insect world.

ABC News

Obituary for entomologist Justin Schmidt, who studied stinging insects and deliberately got bitten by them to study the pain. He compiled a "Schmidt Index" 1-4 pain ranking of various insect bites with vivid descriptions. 🎆

"Bullet ant" with the highest pain index of 4: "pure, intense, brilliant pain. Like walking over flaming charcoal with a three-inch nail in your heel."
