Held a heddle carving workshop the other week and since it's a few years since last time I thought it best to make a bunch to see if I liked the same method.
I've mostly made larger ones before but these smaller are also super nice carving.

Narrow band weaving. Woven from silk yarn using a rigid heddle based on a Roman find from South Shields, UK.
Why yes, I have just been on a weaving workshop!

Last week, I travelled down to the Sjuhärad region to deliver these heddles to Vävkompaniet and visit Åke Erlandsson, who has been making heddles for them for many years. It was awesome to see some of the heddles he's made and his workshop, where he has crafted several hundreds of them.

You can buy these heddles (and my darning mushrooms) on Vävkompaniet's website. Naturally, Åke's fantastic heddles are also available there! 😄

A huge thank you to Maria Stawåsen at Vävkompaniet for coming along and making sure I got to meet Åke.

Not sure why it’s so pleasing to make cloth out of a bunch of string, but it really is. I keep squeezing my cloth rod to see how much I’ve finished already. 🤣

This is a rigid heddle that i made. it´s a tool for weaving bands. I have carved it from a solid piece of alder wood and painted it with paint that i made from raw pigments and linseed oil.

I love #weaving. My skills are pretty basic. I've mostly been weaving on #rigidheddle Now I'm learning how to weave on a #4shaftloom. I love #looms and #textilehistory.

This particular project is one of the first ones I've warped without help. Mistakes were made. We're on a break. So it sits in the middle of our tiny living room until I have the heart to go back and fix it, thread by thread. I'm happy to be learning so much from this project and yet, we're still on a break.

Bon.

Bisous

Weaving is coming along - who knew silk was so sloooow!

Decided I had enough clasped weft so now I'm learning how to use a pick up stick. Anyone got a favourite woodworker who makes them? (I know, I *can* use a ruler or something, but I really love pretty, well-made tools. And paying artists!)
