Five Classic TV Shows with Awkward Opening Narration
In the days before streaming services and DVR, viewers sometimes missed the first episode of a TV show. To fill in new viewers who were tuning in for the first time, some shows used a catchy theme song to explain the premise, like Gilligan’s Island, The Patty Duke Show, The Brady Bunch,

Gilligan was an evil genius. Prove me wrong.
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip... or was it? Gilligan’s Island was a lighthearted, silly, oddball sitcom that originally aired from 1964 to 1967 and spawned decades of TV movies, reboots, spoofs, cartoons, merchandise, and even a musical. Nothing beats a catchy theme song with fun lyrics you can sing along to, but some instrumental sitcom theme songs are so catchy that I find myself trying to sing along with them too. It usually comes out something like, “Dah dah-dah dah-dah daaaaah dah dah-dah dah dah-daah daaaaah,” or “Doo-doo doo-dooooo doo-doo doo doo-doooo doo doo-doo doo doo-doo doo-doo-doooo.” (If you recognized either of those, I’m really impressed.)

On Newhart, TV producer Michael Harris (Peter Scolari) once said, “I don’t think I could ever really be happy doing a show that didn’t have a catchy theme song that explained the premise.” Michael and I are on the same page when it comes to TV shows. There’s nothing I love more than a catchy theme song. There have been times when I’ve watched a show I didn’t really like just because it had a good theme song.
