@Climatehistories

This is horribly reminiscent of the demonisation of #redvienna in early 1930s #Áustria .

'Funded primarily through a hypothecated tax on luxuries such as champagne or horse-riding, the inaugural phase of socialist-governed “Red Vienna” saw 65,000 socially rented apartments shoot up within the city'

The social housing secret: how Vienna became the world’s most livable city

In the Austrian capital, renters pay a third of what their counterparts do in London, Paris or Dublin. How is it possible?

The Guardian

Vienna has the most successful housing of any major city in the *world*. It's a city where people of every income and background live in comfort without being rent-burdened, without worry about eviction, mold, or leaks. That's the legacy of #RedVienna, the Austrian period of Social Democratic Workers' Party rule and built vast tracts of high-quality public housing. The system was so robust that it rebounded after World War II and continues to this day:

How Vienna took the stigma out of social housing

In some European cities living in social housing is a misfortune. In Austria’s capital it’s an indicator of high-quality urban life.

A building over a kilometer long? Four tram stops? Municipal housing? Yes, get your exercise time in and walk around the Karl-Marx-Hof.

Or visit its Waschsalon Nr. 2 where you can visit the Red Vienna / Rote Wien exhibitions.

Architecture is politics and, creating new spaces in already existing cities, can only be done by restructuring. The focus on planning to minimize investor involvements and make cities and quarters liveable places to come together and bring also politics into a social space, is still neglected.

When people say that
#Hamburg for example is a nice city, you really have to search for open places in which it is possible to meet people in neighborhoods and quarters. This is not only done to maximize housing and business opportunities, but also a political act to minimize places to control social organization.

When
#GiletsJaunes started meeting at traffic intersections in #Paris this was also an act to create those political spaces that are missing, or have been taken from us.

Of course, meetings online are easily created and spatiality can be structured while you go, but still directness and emotional factors cannot really be transported.

This podcast series is a collective work, part of the research conducted by the Chair of Urban Regeneration at the University of Luxembourg. The new Chair and its studio produces immersive research by exploring site-specific materials, oral histories, existing situations, and political frameworks—in short: alongside publics and their narratives. This exploration is complemented with an archive of experiences that help us in the analysis of the local context, engaging into conversations with international researchers, artists, curators, politicians, economists, and activists.
