Currently listening to this podcast episode where the @oxidecomputer crew and in particular @bcantrill have Jeff Rothschild tell about his accomplishments, and as someone who has commandeered the pseudo-terminal device (aka #PTY) API provided by the Unix kernel for fun and profit, I am absolutely flabbergasted at hearing about a “gourmet” line discipline he helped develop back in the 80’s (around 42:00 in https://onthemetal.transistor.fm/episodes/jeff-rothschild ); seems largely lost to time, sadly.

I’ve made a pty wrapper for detaching from long running processes: https://github.com/myobie/pty

I prefer this over tmux or zellij – only keep long running processes that matter, not a bunch of random incidental bashes and such. Uses xterm/headless so it works with anything, even vim.

I’m also working on a websocket api for the pty server… if you have any ideas for what you’d want to see there then let me know. #development #shell #pty
