After many years in storage bins, I finally carved out a place in the basement for my NES. I've had this for about 35 years. At one point during the last 90s/early 2000s, I had over 100 games because I kept getting them for like $1 at flea markets and the like. It's slowly shrank over the years. This is about the point where there's nothing left I'm willing to part with. For everything else, there's an Everdrive.

#PoolofRadiance update:

It is done! The evil dragon has fallen, and my heroes are victorious!

So, end of game review:

I couldn't have finished this without the help of walkthroughs and the Gold Box Companion. I love experiencing these older CRPGs, but GOD DAMN are some of their design choices -- both those made of necessity and those made of choice -- infuriating at times.

Still an experience I'd recommend to anyone who wants to see a good implementation of TTRPG rules in video game form.

Today's #PoolofRadiance update:

Gonna take a break from the game for today. My last fight last night involved something like 120 kobolds, 8 trolls, around 14 wild boars, and some magic-casting fghters and ballista.

Spread across three encounters.

Back to back, with no resting in between.

To say that I found that to be infuriating would be putting it mildly.

So! Taking a day to depressurize, then I'll see if there's another solution to that problem. Surely that can't be the intended fight...

Today's #PoolofRadiance update:

I'd thought from reading info on it on Steam that the version of Gold Box Companion integrated with the Steam version of the game(s) didn't support the alternate leveling stuff.

I was wrong: found the button today.

So, I now have the ability to ignore racial class limits! That's cool. It changes my potential plans for future games, though, since now I have to consider if I want to forego getting a Ranger and/or Paladin and stick with what I have permanently....

Tonight's #PoolofRadiance update:

Old screenshot, but same old same old. I've cleared out the manor, and am working on clearing out the wealth district and the Temple of Bane.

After this is the library, then some overworld exploring, I think, before tackling the graveyard.

I lost about an hour's progress earlier today due to a Mysterious Door in the wealthy district that tried to map loop me than crashed my game. Other than that, it's been a great time.

Also, 1st Ed THAC0 is absolute bull.

#PoolofRadiance update:

Tried the encounter with the trolls and ogres -- YOU know the one -- like four times. No go yet.

Current party levels are Fighter 3, both clerics 4, Fighter/Thief 2/2, Magic-User 3, and Fighter/Magic-User 1/2. So, yeah: gotta come back to that later.

On the one hand, I feel like using the 'encamp-fix' deal in GBC is a bit cheat-y, as is the ammo replenishing setting.

On the other, the rest interruption rate is BS, and the ammo thing is at best a convenience, so.
