Alberta Orphan Well Strategy Faces Pushback from Residents, Municipalities, Experts

Pushback is growing among Alberta municipalities, landowners, and concerned residents who say the province is pressing ahead with a regulatory system that lets oil and gas companies dodge taxes, skip rent, and leave orphaned wells behind.

The Energy Mix

The naming of a “mature asset” strategy (instead of a clean-up strategy) for the Alberta government is classic PR spin - a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

It takes an accounting concept and uses it to suggest the government is somehow responsible for ensuring profits for the fossil fuel industry.

And many Albertans are seeing through it.

Facing a $349M deficit (or double that if you include the uncollected carbon levy) Saskatchewan is full steam ahead on coal with a plan to spend close to a billion dollars on refurbishing coal.

They’ve ruled out converting to gas (not much better), or even mentioning solar or wind for…reasons? Energy security?

Read my update on the SaskPower plan to burn more coal despite it being the dirtiest fossil fuel.

Saskatchewan Cites Energy Security in $900M Coal Refurbishment

Saskatchewan is pressing ahead with its plan to keep burning coal for electricity, committing $900 million over four years to refurbish its coal-fired power plants in the face of a projected $349-million budget deficit.

Hey, voters in Battle River-Crowfoot: Your $1.5B in well clean-up might be something you want to talk to the candidates about.

“...the federal government could take measures to force the oil industry to pay for cleanup.”

"If the next Member of Parliament elected to Battle River-Crowfoot ensures the federal government takes measures to make the industry pay, Albertans could save big."

Ethics Complaint Targets Oil Advisor at Heart of Alberta’s Cleanup Plan

A rural landowner in Alberta is calling for an ethics probe into a senior advisor to Premier Danielle Smith, alleging the architect of the province’s oil and gas cleanup strategy held multiple conflicting roles—consulting for the oil sector, advising the Premier, and sitting on the energy regulator’s board—while receiving public funds through sole-sourced contracts.
