2007. A $2,500 pocket PC. Now worth... $200. Still runs Resident Evil. 🧟🎮

Sony UX58. 4.5" touchscreen. Slide-out QWERTY. 484 grams. Intel single-core. Windows Vista (ugh). Upgrade to XP or Win7 to survive.

Hardcore modders swapped in dual-core CPUs, extra fans, bigger SSDs.

Then—Resident Evil 2 remastered. On your palm.

Not e-waste. Digital treasure.

Another thing that really surprises me is that the #GPS stuff is driverless on #PocketPC.

I don't really understand why. Cameras, LAN adapters, non BT Keyboards, etc. all require drivers, but not the GPS stuff.

GPS uses the #NMEA standard but i find it hard to believe that support for this was baked into #WinCE.

Whatever the reason its quite convenient!

Also Garmin & Tomtom have navigational software that works on #PocketPC.

Unfortunately I am still trying to figure out how to configure these. Especially with newer maps which I have downloaded but can't figure out where to put them in the programs file structure & get them to integrate properly.

There is a lot of older software that Is easy enough to find, installs & works great though.

Pharos had the OSTIA software & Microsoft had Streets and Trips.

Recently I have been toying around with a lot of the old #PocketPC #GPS stuff.

There are a variety of different ways to connect to a GPS. Some connect via the Compact Flash slot, some are SDIO, some Bluetooth and others through a physical serial cable.

You also have to decide on what GPS software that you want to use and then find compatible maps.

I'm still figuring things out and it is quite finicky but when it works it is surprisingly decent!

@finisek Yeah. It's such a strange decision. I have no idea why they would restrict it from being accessed on a PC while seemingly EVERYTHING else is easily accessible.

It was a wakeup call for me though.

I will be finding a different app to use and will certainly be making heavier use of the voice recorder on my #PocketPC

Thanks again!

After upgrading my #Android phone a while back, I decided to take the old phone (Pixel 6) and backup all my photos, videos etc.

As I am copying them to my computer I was having a hard time finding where the voice recordings were located.

I take a LOT of voice recordings & haven't backed them up in years.

After doing a bit of reading it sounds like #Google sealed them off and you have to have root access unless you share them online.

WTF?!

#PocketPC would never do this to me.

Catch of the Day: The Pocket PC Revival! 📟🖋️

Hey Retro Fans!
Today, our FrogFind radar caught a true gem from the early mobile era: Internet Explorer 4.01 on Windows CE (Pocket PC)!

Who doesn't remember the turn of the millennium, proudly pulling a Compaq iPAQ, HP Jornada, or Casio Cassiopeia out of a suit pocket? These devices ran Windows CE, featured resistive touchscreens operated with a tiny plastic stylus, and often boasted a whopping 32 or 64 megabytes of RAM.

The integrated "Pocket Internet Explorer" was a marvel back then, but is completely lost on the modern web. If it encounters even a kilobyte too much of modern JavaScript, the tiny processor immediately gives up. But this is exactly where FrogFind shines! On the classic 240x320 pixel displays of these PDAs, pure, fast HTML is rendered—and suddenly, the internet of 2026 is usable again on hardware from 1999.

Cheers to the saviors of classic PDAs! Keep a close eye on your styluses!

Browsing Ebay I came across this CF Ethernet adapter from TRENDnet.

Look familiar?

Other than the change in color it looks identical to the offering from Pharos.

It appears to be a rebrand. The #WindowsCE drivers are v1.5 and still available online.

The file structure looks EXACTLY like the Pharos disk. So i ran the installation and it installed the drivers on my PPC!

Unfortunately I can't seem to get it configured correctly but these drivers actually install which is progress.

Sonic the Hedgehog fans should love this. Besides, this game was for Windows CE. Registration: first, run the licensed executable file, enter any code. The game will report it as invalid, but that's not important. What matters is that a record of the key will be created in the system. Close everything. Run the unlicensed executable file, and if you've done everything correctly, the game will be registered.

@sverx The game itself is probably just slightly above average. It's a fun playthrough but nothing amazing. It's mostly just the art design and music that make it something special.

I loved it so much that I actually made some custom wallpaper for my #PocketPC.
