As far as I can tell, the amount of energy required to generate one “AI image” [sic] is about equivalent to 20 seconds of gaming on a mid-range rig(*).

So huuundreds of hours dropped on this would equate to thousands of AI images.

Something for some in the #pioutocracy to consider.

Wrapping our heads around AI and climate

Alp Kucukelbir, co-author of a recent “Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change Mitigation Roadmap,” discusses the strengths and limits of AI in relation to climate, where it all might be headed, and how concerned we should be about the energy use of data centers.

Oh, FFS, I'm not claiming anything related to the situation in Gaza, and certainly not aiming to armchair quarterback anything or claiming any relevant expertise.

Please take your projection and #Pioutocracy to a different thread where it might be relevant.

@Bentley

Thank you so much for this.

A rational discussion about what AI actually is and what benefits it can confer, not least in the realm of climate.

One additional observation for many of the #Pioutocracy, it seems that generating one image using a system like ChatGPT probably uses about as much energy as 20 seconds of gaming.

@gknauss
Oh, yes, absolutely.

Scraping content from the internet is just like forcing indigenous people off their homelands onto reservations and massacring them in their thousands.

JFC get over yourself.

Suggestion for a new term:

#Pioutocracy

to describe the Holier Than Thou gallery who sneeringly apply purity tests typically on the basis of insufficient and inadequate understanding of the topic on which they're commenting.
