The "Friends of Rangikapiti" are a voluntary group who have planted thousands of native trees and operated a pest eradication programme with DOC support in the Rangikapiti Pa reserve at Mangonui. Yesterday they had a working bee clearing weeds around young trees planted last winter. They have done amazing work for the benefit of us all and, because of their efforts, the native birds have come back - including a resident kiwi.A must visit place with great walks if you ever visit the Far North. #aotearoa #doubtlessbay #environment #reforestation #pesteradication

Great spotted kiwi found far from home

"The discovery of this #kiwi at the northern tip of the #SouthIsland is being hailed as remarkable, and a boost for local #PestEradication efforts... Once common in the area, there had been no sightings of kiwi in the hills behind #Pūponga for decades... Finding it there raised not only the profile of the #conservation land, but a whole heap of questions: Where the kiwi may have come from, is it resident, has it walked a long way?"
