Whoops. Forgot to finish and publish this draft. Backdating this even though I actually finished it in November.

Reading

Not sure what happened but somehow I logged my best reading month since record keeping began (on Goodreads in 2011). I think it was a combination of making more time for books, reading aloud with our child again, and a bit of padding with graphic novels. These are in no particular order.

It Rhymes With Takei

Lovely graphic novel memoir from George Takei with a lot about being closeted for most of his life. I didn’t realize how much Trek was an early career break for him that then made it harder to get other gigs, or his local politics work in LA. Does contain some tragic stories of the AIDS epidemic.

Still Going, Boldly

A Penn State alumni magazine interview with Jonathan Frakes on his career in and out of Star Trek. Some little stories I’d never heard before.

Project Hail Mary

We caught a trailer of the upcoming Gosling movie. (Technically the trailer spoils something big about the book, but it happens about a third of the way in.) This has been on my list since it came out but the movie coming motivated me to squeeze in the book before that comes out.

I had enjoyed The Martian and this was similarly fast-paced and super readable while also having some “harder” sci-fi and some interesting linguistics content, which is catnip for me.

The Lessons of a Glacier’s Collapse

A sad preview of the rest of the 21st century from the Alps.

Here Comes the Sun

On a more hopeful note, Bill McKibben’s new book is excellent and a quick read. Solar and other renewables are beating fossil fuels everywhere so we might just turn things around (although with still plenty of damage along the way). The saddest part is that our right wing anti-science turn means the US has completely ceded leadership on this, probably for the rest of the century and our eventual decline. We got the book as part of virtually attending his SAL event.

The AI Con

This book probably deserves a full separate post on generative AI which I’ve been mulling over for months. It’s a very good overview of how these models fail and are not fit for many purposes. I have so many passages that I captured from it that spoke to me:

Writing is intertwined with the act of thinking, not separate from it.

p. 50

We can’t delegate science to machines, because science isn’t a collection of answers. It’s a set of processes and ways of knowing.

p. 117

Software systems are tools, which people use to do things. We wouldn’t say that hammers have a “superhuman” ability to drive in nails, nor that airplanes have a “superhuman” ability to fly.

p. 167

They also do a good job of covering the incentives behind Doomers (I’m not at all worried about rogue AGI, I’m worried about nefarious humans and the systems of harm we create).

Also they did apologize on their podcast for “John-Luc Picard” making it into the book.

Civility Is A Fantasy

Roxanne Gay on the Trump administration’s efforts to silence dissent through appeals to civility:

Calling for civility is about exerting power. It is a way of reminding the powerless that they exist at the will of those in power and should act accordingly. It is a demand for control.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Our child has read these previously but I never have. I did see the one terrible movie adaptation with my Little when it came out. We’ve been reading about a chapter at bedtime, which works out because if he nods off he already knows the story.

We finished the first book, The Lightning Thief and moved on to The Sea of Monsters before starting The Titan’s Curse, which we’ll probably finish next month.

Overall I’m really enjoying these; there’s a few things that are already a tiny by early 2000s dated or cringey (like the emphasis on the legacy of Western Civilization) but if you want an alternative teen with magic powers and special destiny fighting against a rising evil that adults are ignoring that’s much more inclusive, you can’t go wrong with Riordan’s stories so far.

One odd thing is that our paperback copy of Sea of Monsters, all in the same boxed set, was riddled with typos! Missing words, misspelled names, mashed together sentences. I noticed at least a dozen errors! I think this one overall was also a little more predictable for me because of my mythology knowledge and how much it riffs on The Odyssey.

Playing

Not as much game time this month, and largely avoided the Steam Sale… probably my next purchase is going to be Hades II?

Jeopardy! Daily

I love daily trivia (including LearnedLeague and JetPunk) so this new Apple Arcade entry quickly entered the rotation. I’ve opted to do the typed answer version as a challenge instead of multiple choice; unfortunately their answer tuning is a little funky so I’ve gotten some frustrating misses like this one:

Watching

With school starting we slowed down on the MCU, catching only Doctor Strange. Kid really enjoyed the astral plane animation effects. Overall one of the better origin story entries. McAdams has more to do than I remembered. We also rewatched various favorites like Elemental and Muppets Most Wanted.

Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour

As some of this Swiftie house getting hyped for the release of The Life of a Showgirl we found someone had a copy of this on YouTube despite it falling off Netflix like two years ago. Their version also had some phone footage of special songs from a few of the last shows of the tour.

You can definitely see the elements that became the Eras Tour, though that one is even more refined. I’m not surprised they avoided the crane lift.

Hackers

Hard to believe this movie is 30 years old. I think I had last watched in 2010 but didn’t remember much of it anymore except the final iconic hacking sequence. Definitely not a family movie yet. I recognize all the ways it is not good and doesn’t make sense but the vibes are impeccable. It feels like it captures what ’90s teen me imagined a future with computers would be like. It’s no wonder it’s so popular in my 40-something nerd circles on Mastodon. This interview about the film was interesting too.

Listening

We’re waiting for her new album so we’ve been listening to a lot of other Taylor to tide us over.

It’s My Book They’ll Walk If I Tell Them Too

Tom Cardy with a hilarious riff on the pacing of The Lord of the Rings.
