Dynamite sets July 27th for ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ return
Buffy is back with a new story that pulls in familiar faces, raises the stakes, and teases a twist fans won’t see coming.

So I'm back up to Shadow in my current reaction series and the person reacting is, as usual, kind of annoyed with Riley's behaviour. And I get this angle to some extent, it can come across as entitled or selfish, and maybe it is.
But I'm not sure if people reacting this way are really getting the point that Riley himself spells out, I think in this episode or one of the next couple? (Reactions cut a lot out and I'm not always 100 percent paying attention.)
He doesn't want Buffy to make time for him while all this horrible stuff is going on. That's not the point. What he's saying is that including Riley shouldn't, in the kind of relationship he wants, feel like "making time" at all. On the contrary, his presence should be a source of support that helps Buffy through hard times, not a distraction to be put on hold when things are tough. It's not Buffy's fault that's not the case but it is a clear indication that their relationship isn't that close.
Spike and Dawn in this episode both compare Riley's relationship with Buffy to Angel's, and there's actually a clear illustration of the difference in season 2 when Angel loses his soul. Buffy said back then to Willow something like "when something awful like this happens, my first instinct is to run to Angel". When things are bad, Buffy will never run to Riley.
So yeah maybe everybody gets this and they just think Riley is still being an ass for bringing this up and bugging Buffy about it in the middle of this crisis. Which is fair and probably also true. Or I'm missing something about the situation. But it's never quite clear to me if people get this point or not.
