NO ANIMALS WERE HARMED IN CREATING THIS POST.
It’s one thing to have a photo in mind, but a completely different task making it. Trust me, I’ve been there more than I care to remember. And this was such a moment.
For reasons unknown to mankind, the cat of a friend of mine preferred to drink from the fishbowl when she had fresh water at her disposal. Having seen it happening several times, I thought it would give a good photo of a cat looking dangerously at a gold fish. However, conditions were sub-optimal.
First there was the lighting problem: the bowl was standing in front of a window with plenty of light and, since my friend understandably didn’t want me to move the bowl or let me use a flash light, I had to make do with reflectors.
Then there was the cat: how do you explain to her that she can’t drink?
And ultimately (and the most challenging task) the gold fish had to be a) within reach of the cat and b) look innocent and unperturbed.
And both cat and fish had to be in focus, but I wanted a shallow depth of field.
I don’t remember exactly, but I made 30 clichés or so, but ultimately I am proud of the result, and I wouldn’t change anything.
