Alright, a little write-up on why I'm checking out #GoToSocial, and how I am hosting the instance - https://shellsharks.com/notes/2025/01/10/gotosocial-on-knt-host

@cmdr_nova I’m (unsurprisingly) partial to the idea of #ownyoursocial (i.e. having your own instance). But! I think theres a lot of opportunity for more small-ish instances (2-50ish people) to exist on the Fediverse. But how can you attract people given the concerns of durability, moderation, sustainability, longevity, etc… Consider marketing it and running it as a "social cooperative" (i.e. https://medium.com/open-collective/social-coop-a-cooperative-decentralized-social-network-c10980c9ed91) Delegating some control of the future of the instance to the members can be good

@janettespeyer I talk a little bit about why I started my own instance here https://shellsharks.com/own-my-social.

To list some benefits though...

- De-platforming / censorship resistance
- "Owning" your data
- You get a vanity Fediverse handle
- Customization
- Control (over moderation, settings, everything)
- Fediverse instances have *died* in random ways in the past (domain seizure, server backup fault, etc…). You mitigate this by running your own.

Some quick thoughts on why I forklift & enrich discussions I've had on other platforms to my site, something I like to call "Reverse Syndication" or better known as #PESOS in the #indieweb world...

I've recently migrated to this personal / single-user #Mastodon instance and finally got around to writing about that "journey”, explaining how and why I did it.

It is but one more way in which I am pushing further into adoption of #indieweb #ownyourweb #ownyourdata #ownyoursocial ideas.

Honestly, the hardest part about the move was emotionally leaving infosec.exchange, I explain why in the post (https://shellsharks.com/own-my-social#thanks-to-infosecexchange). Thanks for everything @jerry 🧡!
