In a small town in Montana where I recently visited family, there is a field that in the Springtime turns into a temporary pond. In May, it hosts a wild and completely unpredictable variety of birds that pass through, to the delight of the local birders. I paused there one morning to peek at a plover through binoculars when, all of a sudden, a flock of about 70 white faced ibis touched down.
