"Strong age checks can be done effectively, safely, and in a way that protects your privacy. As with everything you do online, you should exercise a degree of caution and judgement when giving over personal information."

For a start, AFAIK, this is a blatant lie. You can't prove your age to an online service *and* browse it anonymously. So forcing you to do it does *not* protect your privacy.

"... the advocates of a social media ban for kids under 16 appear willing to ignore the privacy implications that the proposal would have *for everyone*. For a glimpse into the void, check out the United Kingdom’s Offcom advice page on the subject, which cheerily makes a case for wholesale privacy intrusions, with a minimum of reliable safety rails."

It maybe old news, and the wrong article

But Basically #offcom in the #UK has screwed up postal 📫 services on second class mail.

Been delivered every 2 weeks after then 2 days! 🤬

Royal Mail could face fine after missing delivery targets

The company has already faced a £16m penalty for failing to deliver post on time over the previous two years.

#Newsnight now mouthing #Offcom's one-sided and spurious labelling of anyone seeking to preserve their privacy as avoiding scrutiny rather than trying to maintain their human right to #privacy.
You would think that a company that were benefitting from rural infrastructure subsidies from central government would be obliged to adhere to the regulator codes of practise wouldn’t you? It seems not…

@dangillmor I wonder if this is another impact of the oppressive UK #OnlineSafetyAct.

Regardless, we are going to see a lot more instances of business and individuals shutting down services that allow public posting, which of course includes any UK based and even UK facing Mastodon servers.

#OffCom recently published its proposals for implementation, for consultation. They are >1,500 pages long.

How can anyone but a corporation understand let alone comply. It'll be a clusterfuck, as warned.

Dear @neil

You've now had a week since you wrote in horror about the 1,500 page #Offcom consultation on the UK #OnlineSafetyAct, in your blog: https://decoded.legal/blog/2023/11/ofcoms-%3E1500-page-consultation-on-the-online-safety-act-2023-and-why-small-companies-dont-have-a-chance/

Having had time to digest this 🤣 I wonder if there's any light you can shed on what would allow a no-server/no-owner Mastodon like service to operate without being affected by the Act. I'm wondering how to build a p2p protocol to avoid being in scope, but don't know the catch criteria, where the lines are, exceptions etc. 🤷‍♂️

Ofcom's >1,500 page consultation on the Online Safety Act 2023, and why small companies don't have a chance

I think if you can't get out of a contract without penalty then the provider really shouldn't be allowed to raise prices during the term of the contract.

Or at the very least, the amount and number of increases should be limited and spelled out to the customer before they sign up, and if the provider needs to go beyond that for some reason then the customer should be able to opt out of the contract without penalty.
