Shaking Other People’s Sheets

even knowing the sound, ohai fox, that time of year again, is it
still find myself across the room armed, cutting lines
cataloging that checked list of wee-small fields of fire
in a building where the walls just measure envelopment
balloon beam construction and fiberglass insulation
light weight perfection of modern engineering
perfect for preventing heat loss, but a bit shit when it comes to penetration
home defense here isn’t a shotgun
though that’s propped cheerful in the corner
one doesn’t let off what penetrates two rooms indoors
fox arguing with fox outside, all sharp edges and laughter
firearm’s just something one doesn’t leave in the truck
and if it’s in, might’s well clean it regular
adrenaline spike winding down as the racket goes up
thinking it’s two decades and some since that zone
rich kids RDXing cars with home-brew, quick-wick stink filtered in
where military holidays get known by the fecal depth in train bathrooms
dead drunk plunderers of civil liberties just crapping away, irregularly drowning
how I prefer the smell of fox now drifting in
the low thunder of my heart settling
no militzia taking their cut, rutting for pockets
behind my hip, carefully cradled, the cat is used to this
up front, the bedtime sharp re-sheathed, laid down to sleep
tomorrow’s soon enough, and from back to front comes well-furred step
to monitor vulpine discontent, to comment a bit, but not stop purring
last night was owls, and truth to tell, the jitter dance was calico, not mine
swift ears tracking, dubious about this whole stand-down perception
but we get on well, and solve in time the fox-fire convocation
home a score and some on, compromise is that one is sometimes armed with cats
and others, now fully awake, disarming with space to meditate while foxes seek conception
