Say No to Clear Cutting and "Fuels" Removal in Our Public Forests!!
There is a massive issue with how we (and the rest of the U.S.) are managing our forests. There is a clear cutting, thinning, and "fuels" reduction "restoration" project (Middle Boulder Creek Fuels Reduction Partnership Project) about to begin on the outskirts of Nederland where 200 acres of public land (County and Forest Service aka Your Land) will be "treated" to mitigate wildfire. These methods are neutral at best at mitigating wildfire and are more likely to cause wildfire than to mitigate it.
These projects are "Trump Brained" science and need to be stopped. Here is a quick list of the effects these "restoration" projects cause:
1. Soil Compaction/Disturbance/Pollution
2. CO2 emissions
3. Habitat Degradation
4. Habitat Fragmentation
5. Invasive plants
6. Waste of Public Resources
7. Noise
8. Needs Consistent Maintenance
9. Creates ideal conditions for grass/brush fires
10. False Sense of Safety
11. Cultural Cooptation
12. Human Hubris
13. Counter-productive
14. Inhibits Evolution
15. Boulder County Species of Concern
TLDR; Wildfire mitigation on public lands is not only ineffective, but makes our forests and communities less resilient. Climate drives the conditions of wildfires first and foremost. Logging forests releases 10 times more carbon than a wildfire does. The Forest Service is the main driver behind this false belief because they have "logging quotas" that continue to increase. There are more of these projects on the horizon, especially if Trump's "Fix Our Forests" Act passes.
Rest in Power Tortuguita!!
