City of Newport Beach: "Methane Gas Seepage Found in Residential Peninsula Home

The City has declared a local emergency due to hazardous conditions at a residential home on the Balboa Peninsula.

Methane gas has been detected at 3606 Marcus Ave., believed to be caused by oil intrusion from an abandoned private oil well beneath the property.

Based on consultation with public safety and utilities officials, the City has issued an emergency evacuation order for the affected property and several nearby homes. ..."
