We received the devastating news last week that Weston has relapsed again. At 17, he is preparing for his third brain surgery after being first diagnosed at the age of 7. This marks his fifth bout with brain cancer in the last ten years, during which he has undergone two brain surgeries and nearly 2.5 years of chemotherapy.
Weston asked to delay surgery until after his hockey season and he received the green light from his neurosurgeon, Dr. Jay Storm at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, to delay surgery until April 9th. Dr. Storm is optimistic that he can remove the two tumors in his right frontal lobe without causing significant weakness or paralysis to his left arm/hand.
Watching your child suffer is an indescribable pain. It is a journey marked by hopeful highs and devastating lows, a test of faith and strength that no parent should ever have to endure. Each relapse, each treatment, and each moment of uncertainty has taken its toll not just on him, but on our entire family. Yet, through it all, Weston’s spirit remains unbroken, a testament to his incredible strength and courage.
This fifth battle against cancer in just ten years underscores a harsh reality: while progress has been made in the fight against this dreaded disease, there is still so much work to be done. Current treatments, though lifesaving, are often incredibly toxic and cause other significant issues. 95% of children who survive cancer treatments will have significant health-related issues by the age of 45. Our son's journey is a stark reminder of the urgent need for research into more targeted and less toxic treatment options for pediatric cancer. One of the most startling revelations throughout his journey has been the outdated nature of pediatric cancer treatments. Throughout his treatments, he received three chemotherapy drugs: Carboplatin, Vincristine, and Vinblastine. These medications, developed several decades ago, underscore a pressing issue: our children are still being treated with medicines from over 60 years ago.
With a blend of optimism and urgency, we're reaching out today to request your prayers and support. We pray that Weston’s story can help raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research, in the belief that no child should have to endure what our son has. Your donation can help fuel the next breakthrough in treatment, bringing us one step closer to a future where cancer no longer steals precious years from our children's lives. Your support means more than just funding research. It represents the promise of more birthdays, graduations, and milestones reached; it is the gift of a future.
Please, if you can, contribute to this crucial cause. No amount is too small, and every penny brings us closer to a cure. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer and offer hope to families who have suffered far too long.
