what i would do differently if i worked on a #mapping client for #mud? drop those full color graphics to trash bin from get go, then:

- draw basic hand-drawn-style map in charcoal greys only;
- only auto draw visible landmarks: roads, rivers, bridges, towers, towns, signposts and like;
- get links right, those are the worst pain with drawn maps;
- let players make their own notes!
- beyond that — reveal nothing on map!

how hard is that? now go look at the ugliness that's #mmapper :-(

other thing: playing #mume today using the suggested web client or #mmapper is NOT at all like playing muds in the olden days. trust me, i've played like ~ 20 years ago. today it seems like cheating — hell, it is cheating! you get a map (!) that's open from step 1, contains lots of hints and outright spoilers and kills the atmosphere :-(
