Requesting Your Feedback on DataCite Metadata Schema Changes - DataCite
The DataCite Metadata Working Group has been working on the next batch of Metadata Schema changes—and we need your feedback! Today, we are sharing a new Request for Comments (RFC) with several proposed changes to the DataCite Metadata Schema. Since Schema 4.5 was finalized, we have been working on numerous ideas put forward by the DataCite community—some of which are reflected in this RFC. The set of changes we are sharing here is not yet a complete schema version; rather, this RFC contains an assortment of changes that may be released in different versions—for example, some changes may be released in Version 4.6, while others may be scheduled for later versions. The implementation details and release timing of specific changes will depend on complexity, backward compatibility, and the DataCite development roadmap.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Updating the DataCite Metadata Schema: Introducing Schema 4.5 and deprecating Schema 3. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
DataCite is pleased to announce the introduction of version 4.5 of its Metadata Schema, and provide updates on the upcoming deprecation of Schema 3.
Schema 4.5 represents a significant advancement in increasing the discoverability and usability of research outputs. This latest minor release, created by the Metadata Working Group in partnership with DataCite staff, incorporates key additions and upgrades to Schema 4 that enable repositories to generate richer and more precise metadata, including support for instruments and pre-registrations, the addition of publisher identities, and substantial definition updates for greater clarity.
As DataCite prepares to deprecate Schema 3 on January 1, 2025, our focus is now on assisting current Schema 3 users in their transition to the more advanced Schema 4, well ahead of the 2025 deadline. This step is crucial in ensuring that all users benefit from the enhanced features and capabilities of the latest schema.
Join us in this webinar to learn about the recent release of Schema 4.5 and the upcoming deprecation of Schema 3. Presenters will share an overview of the new Schema 4.5 features and provide guidance on how Schema 3 users can transition to Schema 4.
The slides and recording will be shared afterwards through the DataCite Zenodo Community and YouTube Channel, respectively.

Introducing DataCite Metadata Schema 4.5 - DataCite
At DataCite, we make metadata for over 50 million DOIs openly available to enable the discovery of research outputs and related resources. This metadata is created by DataCite’s Members and Consortium Organizations according to the DataCite Metadata Schema. When registering a DataCite DOI, repositories submit metadata to improve discoverability and reusability. Today, we are releasing version 4.5 of the DataCite Metadata Schema. Developed by the Metadata Working Group in coordination with DataCite staff, this release includes several changes to help repositories create richer and more accurate metadata. Full details are available in the version update notes within the documentation. In addition to these changes, we’ve refreshed the schema documentation format to make it easier to navigate.

Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Expanding Scholix to support software: your input required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.
Scholix is a long-recognized standard (developed via RDA) to support linking between different objects, predominantly data and publications. The RDA/WDS Scholarly Link Exchange (Scholix) working group has generated a Scholix metadata schema, helped implement this schema in multiple Scholix hubs and other infrastructure providers, and built a community that provides data citation services. The group continues to work on Scholix adoption with repositories, publishers and other industry groups, along with work with the software community over the past year to explore expanding the schema to support software linking and citation.
We've realised that we don't have to reinvent the wheel to support software, but we recognize that doing so is key to linking up the research ecosystem and supporting reproducibility, credit and transparency so we'd like to discuss our proposals to evolve Scholix to further support community needs.
In this webinar we'll discuss:
- Background on / history of the development of the Scholix schema
- Motivations for adding software
- A first draft of the modified schema Instances/examples of the schema showing how software is captured and what kinds of relationships to data and articles could be captured
- Where we are with data and how best to support best practices in the schema
We welcome your feedback so please join us for this session!
