#MarketplaceTech interview with Renee DiResta @Noupside today.

"In the last 2 years, we've seen significant decreases in transparency from the tech platforms..." made sense AND made me glad that my #fediverse newsfeed is controlled more by who I follow rather than what the corporate monoliths want me to see and hear.

Online coverage of anti-ICE protest split by political lenses

Georgetown University research professor Renee DiResta explains how online coverage of the Los Angeles protests against immigration raids are becoming more politically polarized and increasingly harder to verify thanks to AI.

When "safety" doesn't mean safety, when so-called AI companies say they support regulation—until there might actually be some—and when tech companies anthropomorphize LLMs to hide mistakes and avoid liability.

I liked this interview with Karen Hao on #MarketplaceTech about the hidden meanings of the AI industry’s favorite words.

The hidden meanings of the AI industry’s favorite words - Marketplace

Silicon Valley leaders often use words like “safety” and “transparency” when they're talking about artificial intelligence, But as The Atlantic’s Karen Hao points out, AI insiders don’t always say what they mean.

This was a really good interview between Marketplace's Lily Jamali and Elizabeth Goitein of the @BrennanCenter about Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Despite its ostensible focus on foreign terrorism, the FISA program violates its own rules 4,000 PER YEAR! The FBI has used it to spy on journalists, members of Congress or state legislatures, and Black Lives Matter protesters. And it's set to expire soon.

Will Congress renew Section 702 when it expires?

Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act allows the government to spy on foreigners overseas. The Brennan Center’s Elizabeth Goitein says loopholes and abuses of the statute have allowed the U.S. government to surveil its own citizens without a warrant.

The European Commission lists some tech titans as ‘gatekeepers’ of online services • Marketplace Tech - Podcast Addict

The European Commission has designated six of the largest tech companies on the planet as the “gatekeepers” of online services. You’ll know these names: Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft. Facebook parent Meta. Google and YouTube parent Alphabet. And, maybe you’re less familiar with this one: ByteDance, which owns TikTok. They’ve all got until March to comply with the continent’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to give users more choice. For more, Marketplace’s Lily Jamali spoke with Sumit Sharma, a competition and antitrust senior researcher at Consumer Reports, who explained what the term “gatekeeper” refers to.

Via #MarketplaceTech: Sweden’s building an electric road that could charge EVs while driving

I don't know if this is going to be a silver bullet for electrification of transportation, but we basically need to combine all solutions possible to meet our climate goals, so I'm interested to see how it pans out.

The rose-colored glasses worn by #ChatGPT makes writing fiction frustrating. It's always pushing the antagonist to change their ways and the protagonist to recognize and overcome every difficulty. I even heard it when #marketplacetech read a #ChatGPT #scifi story. Where a space pirate in the style of Ray Bradbury (thieving and plundering) ends up enlightened. Abandoning piracy and marauding.

Ohhh the power of words.
Women playing "the role of adult" in big tech companies when the manchild Founders/CEOs get to keep the "move fast break things" bro culture. Ergh.

Why women in tech hold high-profile positions, but rarely CEO • Marketplace Tech - via Podcast Addict

First to leave was Sheryl Sandberg, the longtime chief operating officer at Facebook and Meta known for her bestselling book about women in leadership “Lean In.” Last summer, she stepped down after 14 years. Then, last month, Susan Wojcicki, the only woman CEO in Big Tech, announced her departure from YouTube, a role she’d served in for nine years after joining Google in its earliest days. They’ve left a void of visible women at the pinnacle of the tech world. It’s a trend columnist Beth Kowitt recently wrote about for Bloomberg News. And she tells Marketplace’s Meghan McCarty Carino the way women leaders in tech are often described gives us a clue about what they face as they rise to the top.

I really enjoyed this conversation between @kimberlyadams and Shamika Klassen about Black Twitter, and what the future might hold for minority online communities.

"Black Twitter has been a cultural engine. Where will that community go if the site breaks?"

Black internet users — trendsetters across many social media platforms — might just form their own new space.

The lack of competition among internet providers means Americans are oftentimes stuck with only one option. Susan Crawford (@scrawford), a law professor at Harvard, tells #MarketplaceTech what it would mean to legally classify the internet as a utility. https://www.marketplace.org/shows/marketplace-tech/internet-access-broadband-providers-market-competition/
