The greatest thing about learning to read cuneiform is not just that I might be the first person in 2000-5000 years to read the text. It’s that I feel connected to people who lived thousands of years ago in a different part of the world. They had the same emotions and similar problems. I feel more connected to the people in Mesopotamia who wrote love songs than to any person spreading hate and diversion in my own time.
