Although the parking lot was like an ice rink this morning, it’s supposed to go up into the 40’s F later today, rain all day tomorrow, and hit 57.
It should not be 57 degrees in mid-December in New England. Crazy weather.
The plants indoors are doing well. There are even some petunias still blooming out on the porch, although most of those plants are done for the year, and I will cut them back before the end of the year.
Today and tomorrow, we will finish decorating the tree on the porch and the interior hallway, and put those lights on when we do the nightly tree lighting.
I’m starting to plan the garden for next year. I missed nasturtiums this year, and they do better when they grow from seed here, so I will order nasturtium seeds again. I will try to get some miniature vegetables and see if I can grow them in pots, although my hope is that I can do the CSA again next year. I want to get a patchouli plant (it’s warm enough on the porch) and maybe a dwarf orange tree. The herbs do well when I buy them in 4” pots, although the lemon basil and lemon balm grows well from seed. The petunias from Whitney’s are still blooming, so we’ll do that again. And maybe even get them out on the back balcony next year (we couldn’t this year because of the painters).
Catalogues should start arriving soon, and that’s always some of my favorite time – looking at everything and then winnowing it down to what I think I can actually grow.
Winter Solstice is on Sunday the 21st, and then we add seconds of light every day until June. I feel as though I haven’t really had a chance to sink into the dark yet and enjoy it.
How is your garden doing? What are your plans?
