The lightwell in the middle of the 1890s Baltic Chambers on Wellington Street in central Glasgow. This central void lined with windows and white-glazed bricks allowed as much light as possible to reach what would otherwise have been internal rooms with little or no natural light. This was important in the era before the widespread availablility of electricy and incandescent light bulbs.

The remains of lightwells, lined with windows and white glazed bricks, in Victorian buildings on Buchanan Street in Glasgow revealed by the demolition of the surrounding buildings. Lightwells allowed natural light to reach as many of the internal rooms as possible. As far as I can work out, these particular lightwells are those outlined in red on the accompanying map, which also shows how common such lightwells (coloured blue) once were.
