Terrific new article about how the idea of "neutrality" has been used for decades to deny the approval of #LCSH relating to marginalized people. Great description of how subject headings are created and how inordinate scrutiny is given to certain proposals in order to appear "unbiased." #critcat 📚

Was nur eine Frage der Zeit war, ist eingetreten: Der Angriff auf die Wissenschaften und das kulturelle Gedächtnis erreicht die Library of Congress. Was kommt nächste Woche? Die "Reinigung" des #LCSH auf #woke Begriffe, wie minority, woman, human rights?

Does anyone have a snapshot of #LCSH in some #RDF serialization from before 14 March 2025? I would love to have an archive copy of it before the vandalism of the terms for "Mexico, Gulf of" and "Mount Denali".

We've posted an advisory for our user community on the recent LCSH changes, how they impact our discovery system, and what we are doing to mitigate the problem #Carleton #libraries #lcsh #metadata

Advisory: Potential Changes to Subject Headings in Omni Records | MacOdrum Library

OverviewOmni records employ automated descriptive subject headings that are managed by the United States Library of Congress. The Library of Congress has recently announced changes to established subject headings that do not follow the established consultation process from the library community and do not follow the normal protocols for changing geographic names.

I took the minutes in this week's meeting of the collections department in the Ontario university library where I work. This just a brief sample of what we (and all the other libraries) are trying to start to handle. It followed twenty minutes about Clarivate and how we're not buying ebooks from ProQuest.

LCSH has long had its problematic terms, and librarians have been spending years trying to get these problems addressed, but there was always process, consultation, concensus, etc, etc, all to say “reasons” that held up and prevented changes from happened. This week we've learned that, when appropriately motivated, the Library of Congress can in fact make and push through changes like that! *snaps fingers*

So the Clarivate news turned out to not be the biggest news to hit my inbox today…. #academia #libraries #lcsh
