I don't think the creator is under the impression that this will be as useful as Spanish on your holiday to Benidorm. But there are other uses. Lots of people believe they're bad at languages, mostly due to the inept, half-hearted way they're taught in schools. However learning an easy language like this could give people the confidence to attempt a "proper" language.

Also by having to come up with your own definitions for everything and still be understood, it sounds like a fantastic tool for boosting your mental agility as well as being fun.

Toki Pona is an invented language that borrows from Dutch, English and Chinese. It has only 120 words but is two days enough time to become fluent?

Very interesting! The hardest thing about having a conversation in another language is realising that you don't know the word for a specific thing and then having to come up with another way of expressing yourself without missing a beat. It's like playing Articulate.

We were moving house and I remember wanting to say "that pile of CDs" in Spanish, but not knowing the word for pile. I substituted "mountain" which is clearly wrong but is still perfectly understandable. This language seems tailor-made for people who are good at doing that sort of thing.

My reaction about this post:

The word 'pu' is indeed a self-referential word, but in 'pu' itself, it doesn't mean the official book but is only defined as 'ADJECTIVE interacting with the official Toki Pona book' and strangely it is defined as an adjective while it's verbal usage is far more attested (even in the book itself).

Pu was a reserved word from early on (as early as 2009 when the official site was in wiki modus IMHO) but wasn't officially defined until to book (prior to that it was considered meaning 'semi-colon' or 'book' by some people).

Pu is also an indirect reference to the Tao become Pu is a Tao concept ; Wikipedia's article on it starts as this :

Pu is a Chinese word meaning "unworked wood; inherent quality; simple" that was an early Daoist metaphor for the natural state of humanity, and relates with the Daoist keyword ziran (literally "self so") "natural; spontaneous". The scholar Ge Hong (283-343 CE) immortalized pu in his pen name Baopuzi "Master who Embraces Simplicity" and eponymous book Baopuzi.

The Preface of the e-book opens like this: "I begin with the name of the Divine.' So the self-referential sacred nature can be stated ...

... but in the same preface, jan Sonja states "This is way I use Toki Pona.", a statement that can be interpreted there are also other ways of using the same language.

For people really wanting more words, there is now also a Tokiponida called Toki Ma, which wants to be an minimalistic international auxiliary language (IAL) ; information on it is findable at <https://sites.google.com/view/toki-ma>

Thanks for this great article on Toki Pona !

Introduction to toki pona
M4rt4a | 2015

Hello,

lately I have seen a lot of posts with introductions of different languages. I find it extremely interesting, as a person who is interested in way more languages than I will ever be able to learn. But since my native language is already in the incubator I guess there is no point in explaining it.

Therefore I've decided to introduce something else, something I found out about two months ago and got into it right away. And that's toki pona.

It's a constructed language which was published online around 2001 by translator and linguist Sonja Lang. It has 120 root words, which you can use to create different ones.

For example:

suno means sun or light, ilo means tool or device

but if you combine it

ilo suno means flashlight

Other interesting thing are color names, there are only five of them: pimeja means black, walo means white, loje means red, jelo means yellow, laso means blue,

So what do you do if you want to get another color? Green, for that matter? You just have to use the same rules you would in art class, combine the colors - simple as that.

So for green you just add yellow and blue: green - jelo laso/ laso jelo

The situation is similar with numbers - in toki pona you have only wan (one), tu (two) and luka (five), the others are created by adding existing ones.

2 + 1 = 3

tu + wan = tu wan

the name 'toki pona' means 'good language' and its roots come from many different languages, like English, Finnish, Esperanto, Chinese etc.

I'm aware that there are people who think that learning new language is meaningful only when it is practical, when you can use it on a daily basis or when it helps you at work but I believe that knowledge alone has a very high value. Not to mention that language is fascinating.

With that being said, I hope you enjoyed it.

Best wishes,

Marta
