Happy Birthday to the Chick From Nebraska

That’s how far some people traveled to see Des Rocks, ROMES, and King Falcon at the Marquis in Denver, Colorado. And they said it was one of their best birthdays ever. Good on them. I could understand why – Des Rocks is a showman straight from the 80’s with his slicked back hair and his rock ‘n roll and house building and what have you kids.

I get it. I understand it. I’m not surprised people would travel across state lines to see it. But I wouldn’t. I’m not the target audience. I like grit. I like groovy. I like stuff that doesn’t remind me of safe radio rock because I hate the radio. It’s just ads with the occasional song and anything that feels like it’s catering specifically for that platform makes me feel icky.

Even though I’m not the target audience, everything still made sense. The travels, the sold out show, the people not leaving the crowd between acts and forcing me to watch the show from the back. I could appreciate the energy and showmanship from the acts even if the music and crowd wasn’t for me. Not everything has to cater to me, and I don’t have to be a dick when it doesn’t.

If I had to judge this from my perspective, it’d be one lukewarm paragraph. And if I had to judge this from the perspective of someone who loves rock ‘n roll and dance flicks from the 80’s, this would be 3 pages of praise. And that’s just the way it goes.
