Interesting to see the child safety activist community vaguely split between “Yay France Go Ban All The Encryptions” vs: “Durov Must Prefer French Prison to Lefortovo”

It’s likely going to be more complex than either of these, my money is on a hybrid of interests including the French government attempting to “send a message” that ordinary people are scum and not to be permitted to have robust privacy & integrity, or even the pretence of it. That the French government enjoys sending such messages was noted by noneother than child safety activist John Carr:

So what did the French police do? They drove several trucks up to the offices of two ISPs, went in, unplugged every server, carted them off then arrested everyone they could lay their hands on. Eventually the heads of two ISPS were charged with possessing child sex abuse material. The charges were later dropped but a big warning flare had been sent up.

I wonder if history will repeat itself.

Those French police are at it again!

Reading about the arrest of the CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov, revived memories of the admirably robust attitudes of les flics nearly thirty years ago. In early 1996, perhaps sooner than that, the F…

“Could there be an internet where Tesco, Amazon, Netflix, BBC, airlines, banking etc work well but there are major changes elsewhere?” | child-safety activists ask for a read-only internet

In a sense this is one of the scariest things I’ve read, because it demands removing interactivity and freedom of the user’s voice from the internet; we would be permitted retail and other “consumer” services, and denied anything which might enable user-to-user communications on the grounds that it might harm children, or footballers, or similar.

It’s doubly ironic because the author — child-safety activist John Carr — is running and writing on an independent blog, and one can only wonder who he asked permission to do so?

Could there be an internet where Tesco, Amazon, Netflix, BBC, airlines, banking etc work well but there are major changes elsewhere because the public and Governments get fed up of the criminal and other forms abuse linked with various interactive elements? I think there could.

“Write the Laws for the World in Which We Live—Not the One We Imagine”

Professor Susan Landau is a former colleague and one of the greatest exponents of online privacy alive today; she was also recently the subject of a bizarre attack-blogpost by child-protection-activist John Carr (more to come) so it’s good to see Susan’s work in a proper frame at Lawfare:

The strange arguments of Professor Landau

It is with some trepidation and humility I choose to enter the ring with Professor Susan Landau, a doyenne of techno-world. This does not make her immune from error.  On the contrary, her recent ar…
