Thank you for your response, Greg!

Came across Greg's Instagram and just appreciated his great consistent street photography. And with this sentiment, he has been working on a year-long project, called Khovid 21. It began 14th April 2021, symbolic both because it’s the Khmer new year and the first day of a complete lockdown of Phnom Penh. The idea is to select one picture a day that captures daily life in Cambodia…follow along below:

Been following Richard for some time now and it is his consistency that stood out to me. His work is mostly done in Osaka in black and white (some color) of just everyday Japan. He manages to avoid the common clichés of neon lights, tight alleyways, and general oriental-ism for simply what Japan is. If one were to be objective, you will find this is actually a difficult thing to do for a lot of foreign photographers who shoot here. For more check his links below:

Thank you for your responses, Katrin!

I often see Katrin work shared through mutual friends and was glad I could get this interview with her. It is her originality that she exhibits through her photography that really revolves around the everyday with a more intimate skew that I always appreciated from afar. This is something very hard to do that leaves us re-examining the things we forget. And she usually goes about this with interesting sequencing and editing that you can see in both the responses above and her links below:

Thank you for your responses, Henning!

Originally came across Henning's work through Olso SPC, the Norwegian street photography group. It was his color street photography with heavy pitch black shadows and interesting flash effects that caught my eye. Some of that made its way into the responses above, while I was pleasantly surprised at how more personal his interview became as you don't see a lot of his home images on his Instagram. Will add that more so than photography, it is online chess that I see him more often on haha…check his links below:

It was the photo to question 2 that I saw shared on Instagram that prompted this interview. His proximity to his subjects without becoming the immediate stimulus for the shot is one of the things that makes his work great! And this is something you can see in the responses above whenever the composition demands it. He will be self publishing a book by the year's end, so you can follow along with that on his Instagram:

Forgot how I came to Michael's work, but his simple caption on his Instagram, 'I love irony." was memorable after going through his stream and should be applicable to the viewer of this visual interview. From his response to question 5 that uses a conch seashell that comes off as a Lovecraft creature to his Josephson-esque response to question 6 featuring a polaroid of his family amongst the sea the sentiment is felt. I particularly enjoyed the ambiguity of his response to question 1. For more check the links below:

Just interesting ambiguous photography! I was really glad he didn't hold back in his responses that really show everything he does. From the are-bure-boke photography, to great juxtaposition in his pairings, sequencing with film strips, alternating between extreme distances, double exposures, etc…he does it all with a consistent degree of artistic success that comes off entirely unified in their statement…all while answering the questions at hand in this interview format haha. Thank you for your responses, Tom!

Came across Tom's work from occasional JCH contributor Eric J. Hessler and have really come to enjoy our conversations since being introduced. Tom is a US based photographer who shoots annually in Japan having two books published by Sokyusha:

Here is Eric's review of one of them:

I love the mix of photos in his responses above from both countries spanning over a number of decades as one can see immediately from response to question 1. I was happy to see his response to question 8 which makes sense as a vice as through a good part of the pandemic I followed his collage explorations from discarded darkroom test strips. Thank you for your responses, Christopher!

Christoper is based in Okayama, originally from the US as one can partially piece together from the responses above. It was his slightly desaturated perfectly exposed color shots that initially caught my eye, but quickly appreciated the range after going through his work. And I have to agree with his response to question 3 haha, something I think that shows in his photos. He gives us what he observes and doesn't insert himself where he is effectively the center of attention opting for this fly on the wall approach. The only time he does insert himself is with the response to question 6 his own family, which overall photography wise is entirely arbitrary as both yield great results… I just mention this to show appreciation for his humbleness, which is the sentiment that came to mind upon viewing his work. Came across Gustavo's work on Burn My Eye and it was his street photography that a lot do on that page, but the additional symbolism he manages to work into his photographs that stood out to me. You can see this in his response to question 2 where drinking is implied, but since the subject confronts us in such a lowly manner there is an interesting contradiction symbolized by the proud lions above looking beyond. Or in his response to question 3, where the colors, the shadow, the moment, the composition, the subject enjoying the sunlight all make it a great photo but the little sun design on the bag that symbolizes the whole sentiment of the photograph is the addition that prompted this interview.
