Loved the Jazz Mandolin Project show last night in Boston. "Jazz" feels like too narrow of a word to describe them. The playing is super fluid and they cover a ton of stylistic ground. Individual songs didn't quite stick with me but that isn't the point, it's about the journey with this unit.

I particularly enjoyed the double bass playing from Danton Boller, he used the entire fingerboard and did a lot of cool sliding. Also loved that the 3 front line players used effects. Oh yeah, and Jon Fishman crushed it - his style was perfect to drive this improv, even when it was loose to extremes that almost sent it off the rhythmic rails

Up Where We Belong : Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes [Theme Song of An Officer and a Gentleman]

This track was a huge success. Why they didn't follow up with a duet on "With a Little Help From My Friends" or "I Know a Heartache When I See One" is beyond me. Or an air guitar competition.

Bandcamp and YouTube have so much music that it always surprises me to search and come up empty handed. The latest example is Jamie Masefield's "Ode to Dark Eyes" by Vermont's Jazz Mandolin Project. It was to have been my next post here.
