#NowPlaying John Coltrane - Alabama (1963)

On September 15, 1963, four young girls were killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama.

Later that year, John Coltrane recorded “Alabama,” a work widely understood as his musical response to the tragedy.

This live performance features the classic Coltrane quartet:

John Coltrane – tenor saxophone
McCoy Tyner – piano
Jimmy Garrison – bass
Elvin Jones – drums
