A key figure in the protests was MP Doris Blackburn (1889 – 1970). When she visited Woomera, she became aware of the impact on Aboriginal people. She worked closely with Aboriginal activists such as Margaret Tucker and Doug Nicholls.

There was more serious work afoot, though. Woomera wasn't really about space. It was about developing weapons, missiles and ICBMs which could deliver nuclear warheads. The Australian public wasn't having it, so soon after WWII and the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 🧪 #WomenInSTEM #IWD25
