The Atlantic | There Is Already a Word for the Deep Moral Failures of AI by Tyler Austin Harper

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

Tyler Austin Harper argues that the moral rupture caused by artificial intelligence is best captured by the word “sin,” a term traditionally reserved for deep moral failure and now apt for the dehumanizing practices of AI—from digital companions sold to the lonely to large‑scale exploitation of intellectual property. He highlights how Christian thinkers, including Pope Leo III’s new AI‑focused encyclical, frame the AI crisis as an anthropological one that threatens humanity’s essential nature, whereas most secular critiques focus on measurable harms such as environmental impact, bias, surveillance, and labor exploitation. Harper contends that without a clear, transcendent understanding of what makes us human—rooted in the idea that we are made in the image of a creator—policy‑level fixes cannot address the deeper existential threat AI poses, and that secular humanism’s lack of an equally profound grounding may leave it ill‑equipped to defend human dignity in the age of intelligent machines.

Why Christian Intellectuals Are So Unsettled by AI

It’s sin.

The Atlantic

Two books that are interesting to read together. Illich's book could be called an essayistic cultural history of water and he wrote it in 1984, heavily inspired by Bachelard's book from 1942, which had then just been translated into English. Now is the moment for somebody to write a sequel and keep the 42-year cycle going.

A message from 50 years ago to celebrate the author's 100th anniversary, birthday at 4th Sept. It's from Section "Disabling Market Intensity", Chapter "Useful Unemployment and its Professional Enemies" of #IvanIllich, "History of Needs", world cat

'''‘‘‘Crisis has come to mean that moment when doctors, diplomats, bankers and assorted social engineers take over and liberties are suspended. Like patients, nations go on the critical list. Crisis, the Greek term that has designated "choice" or "turning point" in all modern languages now means "driver, step on the gas". [...]

Crisis, understood in this way, is always good for executives and commissars, especially those scavengers who live on the side effects of yesterday's growth: educators who live on society's alienation, doctors who prosper on the work and leisure that have destroyed health, politicians who thrive on the distribution of welfare which, in the first instance, was financed by those assisted.

> The customary metaphor, voces paginarum - singing pages - precisely defined the attitude toward the book. Reading was then a form of listening, not only for the one who heard the lectio, but also for the reader himself. If you examine the descriptions of the act of reading as an ethologist, an investigator of behavior, you will clearly notice this transformation.

> .. the university does not derive status from its spawn, namely, science, but western science achieves some claim to dignity because it bloomed in the institutional shadow of the academic cloister. This skeptical approach to academic history seems to be at home in Bremen.
