Stop designing by accident. 📐
Most people see a piece of paper. I see the Lichtenberg Ratio.

In a world of design waste, the ISO 216 standard is the ultimate masterclass in functional logic and perfect scaling.
Which do you prefer: the pure logic of A4 or the chaos of US Letter? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇

Frankly, as a Canadian I've been wondering why we haven't switched to the ISO-216 / metric / international standard ourselves.

Sure, there would be some short-term pain, but much less than if we had tried to switch 20 years ago.

I hate to sound like a wild-eyed radical, but I've come to a decision. I'm switching to A4 for my day-to-day needs, and A5 for my sassy correspondence. It just makes so much sense. Take that, America.

But wait, why a 1m² area as standard? Why not a 1m width: 1000×1414 mm?

Sounds nice: same 1:√2 shape as in "A", only slightly larger.

Let's call that standard "B" then, which makes a B4 250×353 mm, slightly larger than an A4.

ISO 216 - Wikipedia

Papersize, how often do you really think about that? Why does that ubiquitous A4 paper have that specific name and size anyway? 210×297 mm seems pretty random.

Well, it isn't. Far from it.

America uses its own collection of random paper sizes, but the rest of us use the very clever and elegant ISO 216 standard.

It starts with a bit of math.

The A-series #PaperFormats (A0, A1...) from #ISO216 is such a thoughtful idea. Fold any of it along the longer side, and you get a sheet the same aspect ratio, but half the area. Why is this important? You can print 4 sheets on a paper (2 per side) and bind it along the middle to get a booklet. No modifications to the original page aspect ratio is needed.
