GR126 Houyet > Dinant, Belgium, 27km, +400m. A yearly classic, but this time I've missed the 'Halte Royale d'Ardenne' only 2km from the start in Houyet 😱. The 'Halte Royale' is a ruin of a previous train station built for exclusive access to the Royal Family. After Gendron-Celles I cut of 2km of the GR126 and took the GR17 instead. The extra loop to
#Furfooz is less interesting and mostly on paved road, unless you also visit the Réserve Naturelle de Furfooz. Close to the beautiful Château de Walzin perched on it's rock, the GR126 turn away from the Lesse river toward the village of Falmignoul. The hike up is less interesting, but after the village you quickly enter the Réserve Naturelle Le Colébi with it's narrow donkey paths through lush forests. Unfortunately I took the wrong turn (when you reach a great viewpoint you're on the wrong trail) which added 2km to my hike. (Next time I'd try the GR17 at this point). I took the alternative GR125/126 next to the Lesse, which gave me a great view on the Château de Freÿr. In Anseremme I decided to skip the last climb to arrive above the Citadelle de Dinant and took the Via Monastica along the Meuse River instead, reducing the trail with 2km so I could catch an earlier train home (after some ice cream and a waffle in
#Dinant 🧇🍨😋). May 2025.
