If you follow the tag, you show in the participants, but unidentified, like its a group.
Tagging into abused overused tags with a potential refinement for better-quality relevant material is something I'm checking. #hashTagFollow

BUT including the "." breaks tags. If you /follow/ the tag and post -- or even just /reply/ using it for relevant good-quality material -- it builds-up when people see it is active. #portugal #hashTagFollow

When are hashtag follows going to work?
Oh huh! I hadn't realised that it *IS* possible to have an additional hashtag search column without actually following it. (Following the tag would clutter your normal Home timeline.) Do not click Follow for the tag but instead open Settings for the column and Pin it, then Settings again to add other tags if you want. An example I recorded:
