Thomas Chalmers, Presbyterian minister, speaks of poverty. The Bible expressly tells us to give to those who ask, even to the evil and unthankful, to give direct gifts to the poor from those items we possess.

Chalmers would have us give directly to the unthankful. Today, in contrast, we’ll put out people for allegations, even false ones, that they are not sufficiently our ally. Such as Afghans.

How can you give to the evil and unthankful?

Tertullian, African apologist, argues against Gnosticism, which says “evil” bodies are not worth improving or caring for.

Tertullian argues that his God always and everywhere enjoins that we protect, assist, and refresh the poor, orphan, and widow. He cites Isaiah and Ezekiel with some of these teachings. He ties this to the Golden Rule.

Have we regained a little bit of Marcion these days?

How can you refresh the widow and orphan today?
