Wednesday of the Second Week in Advent
The bane of our spiritual lives is the horrible thought that we have to handle all of lifeβs challenges and battles on our own. This stems from the sin of pride, which is a conviction that we are to take care of ourselves and depend on no one else, and that we are more than qualified to do so. But itβs a lie, right? We make ourselves sick trying to rely on our own strength. We may be strong people, but thereβs a limit to what we can do, and in fact, a limit to what we are supposed to do.
Dependence on God lets God take us where he wants us to be, which is always better for us in the long run. And Advent is all about letting God do this new thing in us. Advent calls us to step aside and let God be God, and depend on his strength, and let him answer our prayers the way he knows they should be answered.
Thatβs what Isaiah has for us in our first reading. God has created all things, and by his might and the strength of his power, all things are held in being. Godβs strength is infinitely greater than the strength of the strongest young person. Indeed, we are told βThough young men faint and grow weary, and youths stagger and fall, They that hope in the LORD will renew their strengthβ¦ They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.β And that is the gentle yoke that Jesus offers us in the Gospel reading. His yoke is easy and his burden is light. All we need to do is to put down our own yokes and take up his.
Advent calls us to rely on the strength of God in our own personal struggles and those in the world around us. We canβt do it on our own. Weβre not supposed to.
Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!
Overcoming Fear with Faith in Godβs Promises
360 words, 2 minutes read time.
Scripture:
βFear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.β β Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)
Devotional:
Fear is something we all experience. Whether itβs fear of the future, fear of failure, or fear of the unknown, it has a way of creeping into our hearts and stealing our peace. But as followers of Christ, we are not called to live in fearβwe are called to live by faith.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly tells His people, βDo not fear.β But He doesnβt just tell us not to be afraidβHe gives us a reason why. He promises His presence, His strength, and His help. When fear grips our hearts, we must remember that we are never alone. The same God who parted the Red Sea, shut the mouths of lions, and walked on water is the One who holds us in His hands.
Faith doesnβt mean we wonβt feel afraid, but it means we trust God more than our fears. It means believing that His promises are greater than our anxieties. When fear whispers lies, we need to combat it with truth: God is with me. He will never leave me. He will uphold me.
Reflection:
Prayer:
Lord, I confess that fear sometimes overwhelms me. But today, I choose to trust You. Thank You for Your promises that remind me I am never alone. Strengthen my faith, and help me to rest in the truth that You are with me, upholding me every step of the way. In Jesusβ name, Amen.
