WRU vows to fix system after Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake exits

Double blow sparks urgent response

The departures of Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake have been described as a hammer blow for both the Ospreys and Welsh rugby as a whole.

The WRU is already in the process of restructuring the professional game, with plans to cut the number of regional teams from four to three. But the exits raise fears that Wales’ best players could increasingly be based in England.

“We want Welsh talent at the heart of the system”

A WRU spokesperson said:

“We are striving to build a world‑class system in Wales to maximise the potential for the success of our professional clubs and national teams.

We want Welsh talent to be at the heart of the system. We are, of course, disappointed when players leave the system in Wales.

But we are also realistic that top‑class players will get opportunities to explore new experiences and to challenge themselves as they develop their careers.”

Contracts guaranteed, academy to return

The WRU says all existing player contracts have been guaranteed, with financial support pledged for new signings. Letters have been sent to regional clubs and the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association confirming backing for priority deals.

Plans also include the return of a national academy to strengthen the pathway and produce more elite players.

Still eligible for Wales

Both Morgan and Lake will remain eligible to represent Wales despite signing for Gloucester. The controversial 25‑cap law is currently under review.

The WRU added:

“As we work to create a truly world‑class rugby environment in Wales in the next years, we hope that players like Jac and Dewi – and others – will come back to Wales. We wish them both the very best in the meantime – and we still have them at the heart of our national game from an international perspective.”

Dewi Lake to join Gloucester at end of season

The announcement follows confirmation that fellow Ospreys captain Jac Morgan will also leave the club at the end of the season to join Gloucester.

Pathway product departs

A product of the Ospreys development pathway, Dewi Lake has made 71 appearances for the club and 26 for Wales, captaining his country on multiple occasions.

Head Coach Mark Jones said:

“Dewi is an incredible professional and has emerged as a key member of our leadership group in recent seasons. His contributions will be missed both on and off the field.

Similarly to Jac, the club put in a lot of hard work to try and keep Dewi, but this became increasingly difficult with the current landscape and uncertainty in Welsh rugby.”

“Special moments will live long in my memory”

Dewi Lake said:

“The Ospreys is a club that means a lot to me on so many different levels so making the decision to move was something that I spent a lot of time thinking over.

My whole career to this point has been with this team and there have been so many special moments on the way… Coming through the pathway, making my debut, the first time I captained the side and the friendships I’ve forged with players and staff, will all live long in my memory.”

Lions star bids farewell

Since making his debut, Jac Morgan has racked up 51 appearances for the Ospreys, captained both club and country, earned his Wales debut and toured with the British and Irish Lions.

Head Coach Mark Jones said:

“I think I speak for everyone at the club when I say Jac will be sorely missed. He is a tremendous player and leader that always gives his all when he is on the pitch.

As a club, we have always done our upmost to keep our most talented players, and that certainly was the case with Jac. Unfortunately, these matters are sometimes taken out of your hands, especially under the current circumstances in Welsh rugby.”

“Ospreys will always hold a special place”

Jac Morgan said:

“This was an extremely difficult decision for me to make, but I hope our supporters can understand the reasoning behind me wanting to pursue a new challenge.

The Ospreys is a club that will always hold a special place in my heart… I am looking forward to the new challenge ahead, but until then I will be working hard to get back to full fitness and giving 100% for the team until the end of the season.”

Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has announced his decision to leave the NFL and return to the sport that made him a household name — and fans across South West Wales are already dreaming of a homecoming that could reshape the regional game.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, the 24-year-old wrote:

“It’s been a great experience, but it’s time to come home. I’ve decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season. There’s only one thing that’s on my mind — coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can’t explain how excited I am!”

Rees-Zammit spent 18 months chasing his NFL dream, training with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but never made a regular-season appearance. Ospreys or Scarlets — A Bold Move Amid WRU Turmoil?

Speculation is mounting that Rees-Zammit may sign with either the Ospreys or Scarlets, both of which have refused to sign the WRU’s new Professional Rugby Agreement (PRA25). The deal controversially restructures funding and governance, placing Cardiff Rugby under WRU control while leaving the other regions in limbo.

A move to the Swansea-based Ospreys would offer a powerful homecoming narrative — but also raise eyebrows given the club’s current standoff with the union. The Scarlets, too, remain in negotiations, seeking clarity on their future under the new structure.

Yet Rees-Zammit’s star power could be the catalyst for change. A marquee signing might pressure the WRU to resolve the dispute swiftly, especially with Wales rebuilding and fans hungry for a new era.

First Time on Welsh Soil

Despite earning 32 caps for Wales, touring with the British & Irish Lions, and dazzling at the 2023 World Cup, Rees-Zammit has never played for a Welsh region. His club career began with Gloucester Rugby, where he became the youngest-ever Premiership player at just 18.

A regional signing now would mark his first professional stint on Welsh soil — and give local fans a superstar to rally behind.
