when Texas's power system melted down in February 2021 my dad told me something that really stuck with me. he pointed out that deregulation isn't necessarily something companies want.

it's possible that every power company in Texas _wanted_ to winterize, but was unable to do so because they would be outcompeted in the market short term before their risk management ever bore fruit.

setting aside the morality/legality of training #copilot on #copyleft'd code aside, the big danger of Copilot is in the long term decline of software quality in favor of short-term velocity increase. people will(?) understand their code less, and be more likely to introduce subtle bugs and other unideal effects. this is the seemingly far-off winter storm of software, and the inability to ban Copilot at the organization level because your competitors won't is the the winterization failure of the Texas market.
