So I know that working memory does not actually hold very many pieces of information at the same time. This means if you want to solve complex problems you do need to have some foundational information memorized. The more bits that you’re fluent with the less you have to tax your working memory. So it make makes sense to me that practice and memorization have a place. I tell my #genchem students they need to memorize polyatomic ions for this reason.
