At CES 2024, Samsung unveiled some of its new foldable technologies, with a focus on rollable screens. While foldable phones are becoming a reality, rollable screens are still far from being standardized. Samsung's plan goes beyond mobile devices, with a clear focus on cars. The company showcased interesting concepts, with the most attention-grabbing being the automotive industry. Samsung Display presented the 'FlexNote Extendable', a foldable panel that can be unfolded and expanded up to 17.3 inches with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Along with this technology, Samsung displayed rollable panels that can hide in different parts of the car and appear when needed. The goal is clear: cars filled with screens of different sizes that adapt to the content shown. Samsung emphasizes that 'cars are now becoming a mobile space beyond just a means of transportation' and that 'OLED products combined with foldable and slidable technologies will accelerate this transformation'. Along with these innovations, Samsung presented a range of related technologies for the new generation of panels. One of the most striking is the 'Flip' technology, which allows a device to fold 360 degrees, making it possible to use the panel even when the phone is 'closed'. Samsung claims that this type of panel is quite resistant, having passed water immersion tests, sand tests, and functioning in temperatures between -20°C and 60°C. They also showcased another interesting concept: ultra-thin panels. These panels use OLED glass with a thickness of only 0.6mm, similar to a business card. Samsung has not yet specified which products will incorporate this technology or when, but they have made it clear that they are ready for the new generation of foldable, ultra-thin panels.
