I've got to fill out a UK #Tax Self Assessment for 24-25 and I've hit a snag.

This question might sound really easy, but what is "income"?

I have some shares in a foreign company (that I used to work for and were purchased under a staff stock purchase plan).

Are the dividends from those shares classed as income? They are automatically reinvested in new shares, so I won't actually have any tangible cash I can spend unless I sell the shares and the value could go down or up.

I know I need to find a tax expert, and possibly pay for their advice, but I thought I'd start with #AskFedi

The way ChatGPT and Co. give financial advice might violate the law in several countries. After all, they are neither registered as financial advisors nor fit into any of the exception categories. Too bad the current administration and SEC are unlikely to do something about it.

This video about basic money skills is very very good. A lot of advice that might seem obvious, or might not. Also touches on social media and how it can give you a skewed view of the world and your place in it.

I think many of us never got much advice in school about how to manage our personal finances. And maybe our parents weren't good role models either! But we live in a world where big companies are more predatory than civic minded, so it helps to have a plan.
